Year 1 – Dragonflies
Meet the team

Croseo i’r Blwyddyn 1 – Welcome to Year 1!
Welcome back to a busy and exciting term in Reception and Year 1.
Our topic this half-term is ‘Wonderful Wales'
This half term we are very excited to explore the Big Question ‘Why is Wales wonderful?’ and begin to learn about our school, village and country. We will ask questions about Cymru and follow pupil ideas and interests to find out what makes Wales special, including learning about Welsh landmarks, language and culture for example. We will also be exploring different materials and investigating their uses as well as developing our vocabulary by using ‘amazing adjectives’ to describe them. In Literacy lessons we will continue to enjoy RWI activities, ORT reading books and begin to apply our knowledge of Alan Peat 2A sentences by describing some characters from Welsh history and stories. We will also continue to create our own story maps. Maths lessons will focus on shape and symmetry and place value within 20 through a variety of activities guided by White Rose Maths.
We will be learning lots of new things and developing many skills through a range of exciting and enjoyable multi-sensory learning experiences both inside our classroom and in our outdoor environment.
Here is some general information about our class.
In Year 1, the children will be encouraged to be more independent, not only in their learning but also personally.
- They will be responsible for emptying their book bags each day and collecting their belongings to take home at the end of the day.
- Please ensure that their belongings are clearly labelled with their name (water bottles, fruit/fruit pots, jumpers, cardigans and coats).
What to expect when I am Year 1:
- Use Literacy, Numeracy and Digital skills with more confidence.
- Learn new skills and participate in a wide range of activities.
- Make lots of wonderful memories and most importantly have fun!
How you can help your child in Year 1:
- Take an active role in your child’s education. Reading and handwriting are a priority throughout this half term (Our half termly newsletters have all the information you need to help at home and there are some website links and documents at the end of this page).
- Share important information about your child with me e.g., medication, any changes that may affect their well-being.
Throughout the school year, we encourage an open-door policy where any questions or concerns may be discussed. Our only request is that you try to do this at the end of the day so that we can give you the attention you deserve. By working together, we'll be sure to make your child's time in Year 1 a productive and enjoyable experience!
