Children's Rights - RRSA
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is an internationally binding human rights agreement. The convention has 54 articles, 42 of which set out the rights of children and young people. These 42 rights give children and young people what they need to grow up happily, healthily and safely. In 2011 Wales became the first country in the UK to make the UNCRC part of its domestic law.
The Children’s Commissioner for Wales is there to make sure that all children and young people in Wales find out about their rights. This year we will continue to embed these rights throughout the school community and the School Ambassadors will help the school move towards achieving the Rights Respecting Schools awards.

Our Rights Respecting Mascot
Our Rights Respecting mascot, ‘Rocky the Resilient Raccoon’ was designed earlier this year by a Year 6 pupil and was voted for by the pupils of our school. Rocky pops up around our school to remind us of our rights and to help us learn and think about our rights every day.
Our Student Ambassadors
Our Student Ambassadors (also known as our Rights Respecting Ambassadors) have a very important role in our school.
Student Ambassadors have three jobs. These are to:
- Inform other pupils in our school about the Children’s Commissioner for Wales and her work
- Make sure other pupils know about young people’s rights under the UNCRC.
- Do special missions for the Commissioner in our school – the information gained from these missions inform the work of her office and have a real impact on their work and on children and young people’s rights in Wales
Also, they ensure all children have the opportunity to sign up to our School Charter and Class Charters. They check that all classes can name some of their Rights, check that everyone knows who ‘Rocky the Resilient Racoon’ is and check to see that we all know about our rights of the month.
Academic Year 2023-2024
Meet our School's Student Ambassadors 2023-2024.
Our Rights Respecting Ambassadors will introduce the 'Right of the Month' in an assembly on the first Monday of each month. Their assembly presentation will be shared with staff and a follow up activity will be completed by pupils at some point during the month. (Please see the Calendar of Rights and associated National/World events attached).
Gowerton Primary Calendar of Rights
13.10.23
We visited each class and carried out a questionnaire asking the pupils what they know about Children's Rights and their Class Charter. We'll re-visit next term to find out what they have learnt and to monitor the activities related to each 'Right of the Month'.
Academic Year 2022-2023
18.10.22
We were invited to Penclawdd Primary School to meet the Children's Commissioner for Wales, Rocio Cifuentes. We took part in activities based upon Children's Rights. We were given £100 to bid for rights to develop our imaginary island. Our group named our island, 'Freedom Island'. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience of bidding for the rights, it was a lot of fun working together.
To end the morning we asked Rocio questions about her job and how she got the role. She told us that she applied for the job because when she came to Wales as a child so many people helped her and her family; she decided that she wanted to do something to help others.
Rocio was very kind and very passionate about helping others and said that she was very happy to help the children of Wales.
It was lovely to meet up with the Ambassadors from our North Gower Partnership too.
Diolch Rocio and Penclawdd Primary for inviting us.
Lydia and Haroon.
Remembrance Day 11.11.2022
The day began with myself and Haroon going to Gowerton School with Mr Ashton to join in with their Remembrance Assembly. It was very emotional. (Lydia)
We returned to school and took part in the Remembrance assembly. Lydia and I read the poem, 'Lest we Forget'.
Spring Term 2023
