Our Governors

The Welsh Government advises the purpose of governance is to help provide the best possible education for learners. The Welsh Government adopts three core duties of all school governing boards, which are summarised below:

  1. Providing a strategic view – setting the framework within which the head and staff run the school; setting the aims and objectives; agreeing policies, targets and priorities for achieving these objectives; monitoring and evaluating.
  2. Acting as a critical friend – providing support and challenge to the headteacher and staff, seeking information and clarification.
  3. Ensuring accountability – explaining the decisions and actions of the governing body to anyone who has a legitimate interest.

Governing Body Annual Report to Parents - Autumn 2023

Our school governors are encouraged and invited to visit the school regularly to work alongside the Headteacher, Senior leadership team, Teachers, support staff and children. This helps our school governors develop a clearer idea of how our school works, forge stronger links with staff and develop lasting relationships with children.

Many of our school governors at Gowerton Primary school have a partnership with a class of children. They move up each year, following the children into the next year group. Some governors have also expressed a particular interest in an area of the curriculum and work with area of learning teams. Governors who do not have a specific link with classes, offer their skills and expertise in a range of initiatives to support the school, in other ways.
