Safeguarding Advice for All Visitors

Please help us to keep our pupils safe!

UNCRC: Article 19 “You should not be harmed, be looked after and kept safe!”

Welcome to Gowerton

If you are visiting Gowerton Primary School for the first time, the Head Teacher, Mr Richard J. Jones, extends a very warm welcome to you. Our primary objective is to create a school culture and environment where children are safe, happy and healthy.

Regardless of your purpose for being with us, we sincerely hope your experience is both enjoyable and fulfilling. We kindly encourage all first-time visitors to dedicate a few moments to reviewing the provided information, which is carefully developed in alignment with our safeguarding protocols.

At Gowerton Primary School, we maintain robust child protection procedures founded on a clear policy to ensure the safety and well-being of our pupils.

All staff members are trained in our safeguarding practices and undergo child protection awareness training as per the guidelines set forth by the Local Authority. We take our responsibilities in this area very seriously and focus on:

  • Preventing children from being neglected or abused
  • Identifying signs and symptoms
  • Recording incident, issues and concerns over time

In addition, in line with our Traffic Management Risk Assessment, the barrier to gain access to the Staff Car Park is locked between the following times for the safety of all stakeholders entering and leaving our school building:

No entry to Staff Car Park - Barrier Locked 8.40 am to 9.00 am & 3.10pm to 3.30pm

*During these times vehicles are not permitted to use the driveway.*

Thank you for your understanding and commitment to helping us maintain a safe learning environment for all.

  • Providing first aid
  • Safer Recruitment
  • Meeting children's healthcare needs
  • Drugs and substance mis-use
  • Educational visits
  • Online safety
  • School security
  • Radicalisation and extremism

Your safeguarding responsibility while at Gowerton Primary School

Whilst you are present at our school, it is paramount that you recognise your responsibility towards the safety and wellbeing of the children.

During your time here, particularly if you are a regular visitor, you may encounter some safeguarding issues. There is a possibility that a child could confide in you about their circumstances or even disclose troubling information. You might also observe physical signs, such as marks or bruises, or notice concerns regarding a child’s personal hygiene or unusual behaviour.

In all instances, it is vital that you promptly report any concerns to one of our designated safeguarding persons, ensuring that the welfare of the children is prioritised at all times.

Thank you for your vigilance in this important matter.

What should you do if a child disclosed to you?

At Gowerton we follow the 5Rs.

Receive

  • Listen carefully to what is being said, without displaying shock or disbelief. Accept what is said.

  • Do not attempt to investigate the allegation. Your duty will be to listen to what is being said and to pass that information on.

Reassure

  • Provide the child with plenty of re-assurance. Always be honest and do not make promises you cannot keep, for example: “I’ll stay with you”, or, “Everything will be all right now”.

  • Do not promise confidentiality. You will be under a duty to pass the information on and the child needs to know this. You can say “I will only tell people who need to know to keep you safe.”

React

  • You can ask questions and may need to in certain instances. You can use “TED” to help you with appropriate questioning

  • T – Tell me a little more about it?
  • E – Can you explain what happened?
  • D – Can you describe what happened?

Record

  • Take notes as soon as it is practical to do so. Record the actual words spoken by the child – do not re-translate.
  • Time and date your notes and do not destroy them in case they are required by a court.
  • Gowerton Primary School uses My Concern to record safeguarding and child protection issues and concerns.

Report

  • Once you have followed the above guidelines, pass the information on immediately to the Designated Safeguarding Person or the person with responsibility for Child Protection.

Thank you for helping us to keep our pupils safe!
