Autumn Term 2024

Our new class topic for this half term is 'What Lies Beneath?' 

where we will be investigating our BIG QUESTION: ‘How did ‘black gold’ influence community life in Wales?’

This half term the children will be learning about what life was like during this time period.  The children have started to generate questions linked to this topic that they would like to investigate further and from this, will create suggested activities that they would like to explore during their mission work.  The children will explore the history of mining with a specific focus on mining in Wales and our local area – The Elba Colliery.

Languages, Literacy and Communication

Our lessons this half term will be focused around the class novel ‘Ponty The Pit Pony'' by Lyn Whitby and the children will learn to develop their narrative story writing skills.  The children will also have regular practise in class time each week to read independently, in a teacher led guided reading group and practise spelling, punctuation and grammar based tasks.  The children will be developing their welsh language skills, with an emphasis on 3rd person patterns.

Mathematics and Numeracy

We will be focussing on the importance and understanding of Place Value using concrete, pictorial and abstract skills/tasks, as well as developing addition and subtraction skills.  The children will have regular opportunities to use and apply the skills learnt in real life problem solving situations and to further develop their reasoning skills.
